J. Edward Farnum Lecture "Social Justice, Power& Politics in Indian Cinema"

Eminent filmmaker Prakash Jha, in conversation with Princeton Historian Gyan Prakash, will introduce Indian cinemas recently featured at the Oscars 2023. They will discuss the trajectory of Jha’s work and how Indian cinema — the largest film industry in the world, situated in the most populous nation — has represented socio-political issues over the years. Prakash Jha is widely known for his hard-hitting social and political commentary through film, confronting issues of caste, class, power, politics, corruption, patriarchy, and resistance. Jha’s work transcends genres, from documentary film to artistic commercial cinema to television series, and encompasses screenplay-writing, direction, production, and more recently, acting.
