Free your Bibliography: Zotero for Wikimaniacs

Zotero is a free and open source add-on to Firefox which will turn your web browser into a powerful research manager and bibliographic tool. With Zotero, you can automatically capture and store reference information and other metadata on books, articles and other media found online. Zotero allows you to tag, search, export and publish your research materials in a variety of formats, including Wikipedia Citation Templates. In the browser, one can simply drag-and-drop references between Zotero and Wikipedia, and with support for Wikipedia bibliographies and embedded COiNS, users can not only export Zotero references into Wikipedia, they can also import Wikipedia references into Zotero.

Zotero has translators for most major research libraries, digital archives, and popular web-sites, plugins for desktop word processors such as OpenOffice and Word, and has been localized into more than thirty languages so far. As a free and open source replacement for proprietary bibliographic software such as EndNote, in less than two years Zotero has gained over half a million users worldwide. Later this year, Zotero 1.5 will offer the ability to share and collaborate through an exchange server, further connecting the offline resources of individual researcher with online communities of shared interests. Zotero is quickly growing from a tool for scholarly communication and citation management into a full-fledged platform for digital research and online collaboration. The presentation will focus on using Zotero for managing citations and publishing wiki bibliographies.
