Wikipedia as "Real Utopia"

“Real Utopias” are hard-nosed pragmatic institutional ideas for making the world a better place guided by ambitious and idealistic progressive goals. Our purpose is to track the process of adaptive experimentation that Wikipedia has undergone since 2001 in order to identify the basic institutional principles necessary to run a decentralized knowledge network. We explore the possibility that – given the centrality of information and knowledge in post-industrial societies – Wikipedia’s structure can be emulated for democratic decision-making, economic decisions about the distribution of goods and social resources, or any other matters in which local knowledge contributes to collective action.
