A large problem in all wiki communities is that new people keep joining the community, and old people keep leaving. To help get new people acculturated lot faster, starting in april, the English Wikipedia (a very large wiki) will be hosting lectures on IRC. We will be discussing How To Get Things Done, how to alter policy, deal with conflicts between editors, and whatever else comes up in Q&A. Most importantly we discuss why these methods work. Due to this, the lectures are likely to be applicable across many Wikis. We will also host one lecture live at Wikimania!

Current details on our status can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Lectures

"I'm wondering if people would be interested in lectures detailing aspects of how Wikipedia works, and how you can Get particular Things Done, deal with conflicts between editors etc. I'm thinking of using a logged irc channel for this, so that people who weren't there can still get transcripts. We might also do some lectures live at Wikimania. Since this would be the first time doing this, I'd probably start out giving a summary of the five pillars, optimal wiki-editing, and consensus, and how that works and why that works. After that we could take questions and see what people really still need to know, and build from there."

Speaker at Wikimania will be Kim Bruning.
