Feedback on the Collaborative Video Extension

General

The Kaltura demo has now been seen and tried out by users from Halopedia, WoWWiki, Uncyclopedia, and Memory-Alpha, as well as others from across Wikia who were interested. We have not found any major problems that would prevent us using it on Wikia. Angela

Bugs

  • Sound was playing even when paused.
  • Upload doesn't work. After clicking on "Add Video", filling in the first page and clicking on "Next", the site hangs. (Firefox 3.0.1 with Adblock.) AxelBoldt 22:57, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

Suggestions and Improvements

  • The main feedback from Wikia was that users need a lot more documentation. Many didn't get it at first glance and some of those didn't want to spend time just playing with it. They want to know quickly how it works. They also need more examples of how it could be used. Some said it was "cool" but didn't know what they would do with it. I personally feel it has great potential on almost any wiki, but it's hard to explain that without being able to show people real examples. Angela
  • Should be able to add edit summaries.
  • Editing titles and descriptions of videos: When you create a video, you can name it, and describe it. However, no one else can ever adjust it (as far as I can tell), even to fix a spelling mistake. -- Zanimum 12:58, 18 January 2008 (EST)
  • Please stop creating new samples using all copy-written content. I realize it's a heck of a lot easier, but please try and use Wikimedia Commons, and use Archive.org. -- Zanimum 12:58, 18 January 2008 (EST)
  • I haven't the foggiest where to click to add text. I know that there's an annoying auto text when you first create a video, but it was a struggle to delete that, and I haven't found where I'd add new text with. -- Zanimum 12:58, 18 January 2008 (EST)
  • In the "Add image" area, please add Wikimedia Commons as a default, to encourage people to fine our database of images. -- Zanimum 13:04, 18 January 2008 (EST)
  • It would be nice to access the "Add image/video/sound" from within the video editing area. Often, I've been arranging away, and realize there's an extra image I need, but have to close everything down before I can upload, and load everything back up. -- Zanimum 13:04, 18 January 2008 (EST)
  • Do the IDs need to be so obscure? <kaltura-widget size='L' align='L' kwid='OXRhZXN6N2lsNHwyMDB8MjAwMDB8RWd5cHRpYW4gQWR2ZW50dXJlc3wwNXpwZzd4ZzljfDZhYzE2NzI2OTY=' /> looks a bit nasty on a wikipage compared to [[Video:Egyptian Adventures]]. Angela 11:03, 27 July 2008 (EDT)
They have to be that long becuase they combine a number of parameters. This way, we can distinct the video's origin and prevent a case in which a video is copied from WikiA to WikiB, and WikiB's users can add and edit the video. IdoSet 08:41, 28 July 2008 (EDT)
  • Does it work on Linux? I have a Debian Etch where IceWeasel with macromedia flash 7 does not show a video, and I have a Ubuntu Hardy where Firefox Flash 8 or gnash neither did work. — Fnielsen 05:51, 28 July 2008 (EDT)
It works on Linux - can you please contact me at ido.setter@kaltura.com and we'll work this out. IdoSet 08:41, 28 July 2008 (EDT)
A reinstall of Flash did it. The "flashplugin-nonfree" package in Ubuntu now installs from install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz and this can show the Kaltura videos in Firefox. — Fnielsen 19:03, 29 July 2008 (EDT)
  • Is it possible to download a video? — Fnielsen 06:02, 28 July 2008 (EDT)
Once all the videos are uploaded to the site, we'll convert them and supply a link. IdoSet 08:41, 28 July 2008 (EDT)
  • It's not clear to me how to do the things I want. I wanted to edit the video and audio tracks separately. E.g. to have the video and sound of file #1 play, cut the video to file #2 (or display an image), while the sound track to file #1 continues, then the video cuts back to File #1 (properly synchronized with the audio). That would be an important feature I think for things like interviews, documentaries, tutorials, etc....
In that case, you should integrate the extension with the advanced editor - there you'll have audio editing options. We tried to keep the simple editor as simple as possible.
  • It's not clear to me how to get fine control over the cursor, I tried the arrow keys to step the cursor forwards and back one frame at a time, but that didn't work. fiddling with the mouse led to frustration.
  • most of the help buttons in the editor (the question marks) didn't work for me, and the "history" was blank.
  • It's a good start though, I'm optimistic about the future.

Other Comments

  • Despite the endless comments above, it's a valiant start for a free license project. -- Zanimum 13:06, 18 January 2008 (EST)
