Best Practices for Adding Videos to Wikipedia
From Devwiki
***THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS***
We are inviting the Wikipedia community to participate and contribute to the development of best practices for video content in Wikipedia articles.
There are already established best practices, and editorial tips for good text articles. Since videos would be added to existing ripe, neutral, reviewed and edited text articles, it is important to establish certain rules and best practices for inserting videos into existing articles, in order to increase the value of the articles, and improve human knowledge.
1. Videos should generally be kept as short as possible. It is preferable that videos shall not exceed 2 minutes.
2. Videos should be focused on adding visual / sound value to the existing text in the article. Not every article is suitable.
3. Videos enhance the value of the text when they illustrate aspects of the article that cannot be explained well solely via text.
4. Videos and slideshows should be specific to a certain article or portion of an article (note that you can add a specific video to a specific section of the article).
5. Video player comes in 2 sizes (medium and large). Ensure that the video fits into the page in a non-obtrusive way, and does not overshadow the textual definition.
6. Make sure to use media that is under the appropriate CC license. Video extension is connected to libraries of media, audio and video that are governed by CC BY SA license. If you upload new media content be sure that it is governed by a compatible license.
7. Users can monitor their videos and keep track of changes made via the video page. It is possible to revert back to earlier versions of the video. It is also possible to conduct a dif comparison among versions of the video, and see a gallery comparison of the contributions in each of the versions.
