How You Can Help This Beta Succeed
a. Create a Collaborative Video, and add your feedback and suggestions to our Feedback Page. You can import content directly from a variety of creative commons, and public domain rich media repositories. You can also upload your own original content, directly from the Collaborative Video Wizard. All content is rich media automatically combined. You are invited to use the Video Editor, in order to remix it, add titles and transitions, and synchronize audio tracks.
b. Help us write the Best Practices for adding videos to Wikipedia. We need your assistance developing a consensual policy.
c. Help develop the MediaWiki video extension that adds rich media collaboration capabilities to any text-wiki. The source code is available here. We look forward to improving this extension, and we need your help. You can check out Kaltura's Developer Wiki as well.
d. Sign up for Kaltura's partner program, and add the Collaborative Video Extension to your own Wiki.
e. Embed the collaborative video you created on your site, blog, or social network page, and spread the word about this beta
f. You can also sign up for a newsletter that will post updates and news here: wiki@kaltura.com (email subject: get updates)
As recently announced, the Wikimedia Foundation and Kaltura have begun a process aimed at bringing rich-media collaboration to Wikipedia and other wiki websites. The vision of this project is to enable the Wikipedia community to further enhance and enrich Wikipedia articles with rich-media content.
Think of this technology as a form of video-wiki software that is integrated into the MediaWiki platform, allowing users to add collaborative video players that enable all users to add and edit images, sounds, diagrams, animations and movies in the same manner as they do today with text.
We expect this project to help promote the ability of every human being to enjoy the fruits of all human knowledge, including rich-media. In addition, adding rich-media will assist users in explaining and understanding definitions by presenting the visual aspect together with the textual explanation. By incorporating rich media, Wikipedia and other wiki projects will be able to further enhance the quality and richness of their content and truly surpass any existing encyclopedia in the world.

Open-sourcing Video
Kaltura is developing the first open-source video platform, and invites the developer community to join in the project. As part of this effort, Kaltura has partnered with MetaVid and the teams have now begun integrating Kaltura's technology with the MetaVidWiki software. The main goal of this project is to further enhance and develop the collaborative video extension for MediaWiki, and to finish the development of a 100% free software solution that could be installed on Wikipedia and additional Wikimedia projects. The enhanced Kaltura framework will include an interactive video player, an upload wizard, and an online video editor – all based on free software and open standards like ogg/theora
Tutorial
A collaborative video is a video created together by multiple users. Anyone with editing permissions can add photos, videos and sounds, edit them in a full-featured online video editor and then post it as a widget on any wiki page. Adding a collaborative video widget takes less than a minute. Once a video is created, any user can then go in and continue to add material and edit the video.
Instructions for Collaborative Videos
To add a collaborative video to a wiki page:
- Click "Add Video" in the toolbox on the left nav bar
- Enter a title and summary
- Select size and position of widget (in relation to surrounding text)
- Click on "Next"
- Copy the code that appears, then go to the article page where you want to place the player. Click on edit in the article page and paste the code anywhere on the page.
To add material or edit an existing collaborative video:
- Click "Add" to upload and import video/image/audio files to the video
- Click "Remix" to edit the video
